Life on Mars

Had a wonderful hike in the nature with my son today. Saw this fern on the edge of old fortifications, and it looked nice lit by by sun against the dark trench wall. I understand that ferns are quite ancient life forms, perhaps also capable of thriving on Mars, if things were a bit different out there?
