Colleges at Merton, Oxford

We sung Stainer's Crucifixion here today - what a wonderful piece of choral music. Merton College was founded in 1264. In 2014 Merton college clebrates the 750th anniversary of its foundation. Sir John Stainer (1840 - 1901) was one of the most distinguished musicians of his generation. He was closely connected with Oxford in several ways, from undergraduate to churchwarden of St Cross Church. In The Crucifixion, Stainer aimed to provide a Passiontide meditation choral work which ordinary choirs could perform and to which church congregations could readily relate.
