Life in Newburgh on Ythan

A hybrid goose

Most of the time the members of a species breed with each other and not with other species. Sometimes different species ignore the regulations and breed with each other to form hybrids.

This goose, which is hanging around on the estuary at the moment, is such a hybrid, being the offspring, I think, of a Canada goose Branta canadensis and and a Pink footed goose Anser brachyrhynchus. Not only were the parents different species, they belonged to different genera!
