Trachystemon orientalis

This is a vigorous plant if given damp, partial sun, growing large-leafed and lush. However, it can also thrive in that always difficult location: DRY SHADE. It won’t be as exuberant under dry conditions, but will still be a full green understory. These amazing flowers are evident in early spring just as the leaves are beginning to emerge.

Trachystemom is in the borage family---but it doesn't seed quite as vigorously. Around the Black Sea, you may find this plant in the farmers' markets as a vegetable. I’ve never tried it, but am tempted, now that I have discovered this fact. Just need to find a recipe.
