Bald Eagle

By JohnJD

I returned to the location of last night's blip, Stanney Lunt bridge, to photograph this hand crane. The Bridgewater is considered to be the first "true" canal in England.

It is also contour canal, with no locks, which meanders through the countryside. The absence of locks meant that the canal was cheaper to build, easier to maintain and faster to navigate.

These cranes and boards are strategically placed along the length of the canal so that, in the event of the canal being breached, sections can be isolated. There was a breach of the canal at Dunham Massey in 1971.
