"Most people who are accomplished enough bike mechanics to build wheels and balance spoke tension tend to (just a thought) start with decent components," says my cousin. Indeed, but people whose two nice wheels were mangled when they each ate a rear mech and subsequently have to use salvage-rebuilds using very cheap old rims for a few weeks fortunately expect little, and are grateful that they were halfway home from the allotment before the doomed rim cracked, letting a spoke waggle free and wander carelessly into the path of the chain. I assumed it was the one I noticed on Friday, though that picture was taken from the other side of the wheel so I can't confirm without looking at the actual thing.
