Borobudur Temple

We got up early (and I mean EARLY!) and walked to the Borobudur Temple in the dark to catch the sunrise. With our flashlights and sarongs, we joined the other brave souls who gave up sleeping in to watch the sun rise over Mount Merapi and the stupas of the stunning Borobudur Temple. It was beautiful and peaceful, though we had a tough time capturing the photos to prove it! After the sun came up, we spent a few hours exploring the carvings and views from the temple. This one is a 9th century Buddhist temple and also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

After Borobudur, we returned to our hotel for breakfast and a nap! Then it was off to see a few more temples and then to get up close to Mount Merapi, where we went "jeeping" around the lava. Then we returned to Yogyakarta for our night at the swanky Phoenix Hotel, where we ate like kings and enjoyed a table-made Gin Sling at the place it originated.
