THE TIVOLI SOUND CINEMA.

After an eye test at Addenbrooke's hospital, the results were good but I was too bleary eyed with the drops afterwards to go on a blip hunt. I took this shot through the bus window (you can see the dark frame in the corner) as it slowed down and was surprised at the result, as I couldn't see clearly. A new venture on this site in Chesterton Rd, was the proposed Olympia Tea and Concert Rooms in 1920 which, to me, sounds delightful, but it gave way to the second purpose built cinema in Cambridge. Designed by P. Banyard, it opened in 1925 as The Tivoli Sound Cinema. A dancing and music licence was granted for the acts between the films, no mention of a Hammond Organ being there, as in many other cinemas. It closed in November 1956 and was a warehouse for many years. Then converted into a pub known as The Graduate and now belonging to Wetherspoon's chain and renamed THE TIVOLI.
