Van Gogh View

This is a view from the top level of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum is in the background, with its odd towers. The Stedelijk Museum (see yesterday's blip) is behind us.

The Van Gogh Museum has a large number of his works, well displayed on two floors. It was wonderful to see iconic paintings, such as those on the wall here, and in addition "The Potato Eaters"--an early but especially moving work. We also visited a special exhibition of Felix Vallotton (1865-1925), a Swiss artist whom I've liked ever since my first visits to Switzerland in the 1960's.

In the afternoon we paid a return visit to the Stedelijk Museum, for a very lavishly mounted exhibition by a major Dutch designer, Marcel Wanders (b. 1963). He has produced an amazing range of interiors, products of all kinds and architectural settings, and the total effect of the show is quite stunning.
