Bronze Age Living

Akrotiri is a Bronze Age settlement on Santorini that was destroyed but preserved by a volcanic eruption in 1627BC. The guide books say that it could have been the inspiration for Palto's 'Atlantis'.

The remarkable thing about this place is that essentially it is a town that has many similar features to the ones that we live in now.
advanced drainage systems and multistorey living were commonplace in the richer end of town and this has been preserved so well that you can almost see the people coming and going about their daily lives.

There is a huge new visitors centre here now and ongoing excavatinos still 'unearthing' new things. Anybody going to the island should look at this - our Bronze Age ancestors give Wimpey a run for their money!
