Pembridge Gardens, Notting Hill, London

The glorious housing seen here, around the Portobello Road and Pembridge Square area of Kensington (now Notting Hill), came from a huge swathe of building work carried out on the Ladbroke Estate to a design by Thomas Allason, from the 1840s.

James Weller inherited the estate from his uncle and had to change his name to James Weller Ladbroke in order to inherit. Under the terms of the will, he could only offer 21 year leases on any properties, but he got a private Act of Parliament in 1821 to change that to 99 year leases to allow him to develop the land.
