Tit Fer Tats (Hats)

Hats are more than a fashion accessory as these songs attest:-
'You Can Leave Your Hat On'...Joe Cocker; 'Don't Touch My Hat'...Lyle Lovett;
'Where Did You Get That Hat?'...Stanley Holloway; 'Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home'...Sammy Davis Jnr; 'Top Hat And Tails'...Fred Astaire; and one that I like is 'All Around My Hat' by Steeleye Span, 1975. This song dates from the 1820's when a cockney costermonger vowed to be true to his fiancée who was sentenced to seven years deportation to Australia for theft. He mourned his loss by wearing green willow sprigs in his hat-band for a "twelve month and a day" in a symbol of traditional mourning. I hope she stayed true to him!
