If you can't beat them...

Hoverfly ?

We have need of a new tree to replace a Malus (ornamental apple)which blew over during the autumn. We have left it in place as it was near the bird feeders and gave them perches and a bit of protection from the Sparrow Hawk which makes occasional dashes through the garden.

Now that spring is here it really needs moved so are placement was needed. Coincidentally Houghton Hall Garden centre had just circulated the area with offer leaflets 50% of any plant. The last time they had this offer we bought a tree for the holiday lodge and the young lad on the cash desk asked a more senior person "are trees plants?". With such a good offer we decided that as clickychick had fancied a Magnolia soulangeana for some time now was the time.

While we were wandering around considering the other trees and making sure we really wanted the Magnolia I spotted this little beastie sat on a leaf, so I thought I would try for a shot. I was able to get so close that CC had to keep saying "you are going to touch it with the lens"!

I think it is some form of hoverfly, it certainly isn't a bee which it at first appears to be, as bees have two pairs of wings and this seems to have only one.
