It a lot less bovver with a hover

Hoverfly
Eupeodes luniger

I was about to get the bug spray out on our Cistus bush which has collected some unwelcome aphids, when I noticed this hoverfly zipping from one flower bud to another. Initially I thought it was just tapping nectar or sap droplets. According to the insect guide, this hover is a carnivore and it was using its pointy ovipositor to stick eggs on our cistus near to the aphids - evidenced in some of my other photographs which show it pushing its ovipositor under the sepals of the as yet unopened flowers. Then when they hatch out the aphids are food for the grubs. Well good for them - the bug spray can wait.
