Don't judge food by it's smell?

These are my grandmother's pickled radishes. She is 91 and still manages to make these. They look really pretty in the jar and taste great, but the stench is horrendous. My mom refuses to let us eat them in the house because the smell is so potent and it lingers. If you've had pickled radishes (daikon), then you know how bad they can smell. I guess when you say you can't judge a book by it's cover, you can probably say you shouldn't judge food by its smell.
