Jericho

Once exotic fruits,
Espaliered, ripened here,
Spread on wires and nails.
Now ivy creeps to reclaim,
As bricks and mortar crumble.

This wall is part of what was once a walled garden. The walls are studded with nails, which were presumably to hold supports for plants (?). With the sun baking the bricks I can imagine it would have been very good for growing exotic soft fruits such as peaches and apricots.

The garden is now just a wasteland and parts of the wall are crumbling. It's so sad, it would be wonderful to restore it to it's former glory, but it seems the will, and no doubt the funds are lacking. However, it seems somehow fitting for nature to reclaim and restore wildness.
