Williamsons Yard

In the ninth and tenth century Penrith was the capital of Cumbria and for years much fought over and raided . In the seventeenth century it was full of Coopers, Tanners, Weavers and all manner of Tradespersons . These premises were usually indicated by a sign or engraving of something that reflected their trade, for example shears above Williamsons Yard (now covered in paint) was a sign of being in the weaving industry. There are dozens of these yards in Penrith accessed through an entry with a closed door at the end.
