Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Easter through the ages.

At Easter children paint eggs and roll them down a hill to commemorate the rolling away of the stone that had been used to close Jesus's tomb. These eggs were painted by our children when they were youngsters. Not as much care was lavished on the ones that were actually rolled, to their doom!

The biblical event is described in Matthew 28:2.

And lo! ther was maad a greet ertheschakyng; for the aungel of the Lord cam doun fro heuene, and neiyede, and turnede awei the stoon, and sat theron.
- Wycliffe Bible (1390)

And behold, there was a great earthquake, for the Angel of the Lord descended from heauen, and came and rolled backe the stone from the doore, and sate vpon it.
- King James Version (1611)

And there was a great earth-shock; for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, rolling back the stone, took his seat on it.
- Basic English Bible (1941)
