Church Knowle, St Peter's: monument & squint

The Clavell monument

This delightful monument in the church's northern aisle was erected on John Clavell's marriage to his second wife Susan in 1572. The Clavell family lived at Barnston Manor, to the west of Church Knowle village.

His first wife Myllecent had died in 1571, after bearing him four children. All five appear in the brass on the left.

John died in 1609. He is seen wearing armour in the central brass.

His second wife Susan, with whom John had four boys and four girls, appears in the brass on the right.

The squint (or hagioscope)

Immediately to the right of the monument is one of the church's two squints. This is a hole created diagonally in the wall, to enable people in the north aisle to see the altar and the elevation of the host.

The small wooden cross seems in the photo to be located at the end of the squint, but in fact it is standing on the white altar-cloth further behind.

Squints are not very common, but it is always worth looking for one when visiting a church.
