Why do we grow Tulips?

I knelt down close to take this shot and almost swooned from the heady scent of the earth and the damp leaves and flowers. I came to wonder why we plant tulips; you can't eat them, nor use them to make cloth. They're basically no good for any practical purpose.

Except they make us happy.
