Third Year Abroad

Despite having eaten so much the previous day, somehow I still found room for a trip to GBK on Tuesday. Italian food is amazing, but if there's one thing I do miss its a good chicken satay burger! This was followed with meeting Lexi for coffee at Nero which I had always really liked, but unfortunately compared to Italian coffee its just not the same. The on to the theatre with Pj and Maddy to see 'The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable', possibly one the most surreal experiences of my life. This was not your normal sit down and watch play, you were part of the play. Pj was told on the phone that it was not suitable for those with asthma or claustrophobia, oh and are you alright being blindfolded? Who knew what we were getting ourselves into. After queuing outside a warehouse by Paddington Station for a while we were finally let in to be told that it was recommended to check all coats and bags into the cloakroom, as one girl warned us we could be running. The beginning is fairly spooky, you're lead through a dark tunnel and into an elevator where the story begins. After a brief introduction to the characters and a warning to be careful out in the studios, you're let loose onto the set. The only rules are you have to wear the mask at all times and be totally silent. Once out of the elevator we found ourselves in a town square surrounded by different shops and bars. Everyone warned us that we would be split up almost immediately and they weren't kidding, within minutes we'd gone in different directions to explore. The set is so intricate and immense, I'm sure there was loads that I didn't see. It does take a while to get used to how it works, essentially there are lots of different characters who all have their own story line although obviously these all merge, so the best tactic is to pick one character and just follow them through the set for a while to get an idea about whats happening. At the beginning I followed all sorts of different people which meant I saw a lot but it took me a while to work out a sense of plot! Honestly I think the plots fairly loose anyway, there was a lot of jealousy and people sleeping with the wrong person and subsequently being murdered for it. As its set in a film studios there is also a show within the show, so you can never be entirely sure whats real and what isn't. Anyway you get totally sucked into it, we were in there for three hours without realising. At the end you all get brought together for a finale before being taken to an amazingly decorated bar complete with themed cocktails and a live band, the attention to detail throughout is phenomenal. Would happily to back just explore the set some more!
