This is frankincense smouldering away into the night air. Bought at the Muscat souq along with a rustic clay burner, it is pleasant to watch it burn and experience the mystic scent of Arabia.
Here incense is burned in homes to welcome guests. The crystallised sap is from the Boswellia sacra tree grown in Oman and the Yemen. Long ago it was more valuable than gold and made these countries very rich indeed.
