The Great Debate

In common with many other parts of the country, the college held a debate on the future of Scotland. The event featured two of our students on each side, together with two local political figures with opposing points of view. Unfortunately I got so caught up in the debate that I forgot to take a photograph until the very end when the vote was being announced. (49 in favour of independence, 40 against, with several abstentions). It was a really good event and I am just glad that the college/university can be a focus to discuss important issues of the day in an intellectual manner, and without falling out or flouncing off in the huff. We should have more of these debates on a wide range of subjects - the art of the debate has been lost somewhat, perhaps due to the sound-bite convenience of television.
