Tangible Orchestra

Another easy blip capturing Sebastien and Rebecca's installation/exhibition up at West Parliament Square this evening. I had seen the precursor to this when Rebecca exhibited it at the Napier degree show last year for her final masters project. The precursor was a series of pyramids with sensors in the top which would trigger lights inside the pyramids and music on a laptop when people interacted with them.

This was the latest incarnation, these spheres contain lights and their own speakers rather than ones connected to the laptop. There are sixteen sensors around the base meaning that they had a 360 degree pickup. There were a number of them in parliament square and, as people walked within a metre or so of them they would light up and play different sections of music. The idea was that the more people were interacting with them the more fully developed the piece of music would be.

With it being the first installation they had a couple of technical hitches, largely caused by inclement weather they thought, but it was still impressive, even before you consider that they developed everything without any funding, from the electronics through to the manufacture and 3D printing some of the elements.
