Great Crested Grebe on Guard Duty

This Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) was patrolling the waters just a few yards away from where its mate was incubating eggs.

I was rather surprised that she was nesting where she was clearly visible from the car park where vehicles and pedestrians passed within a few yards of her.

My camera behaved perfectly well today so I am beginning to think it doesn't like cold wet weather. I will watch out for future malfunctions and note the current weather.
