Sheep and shepherds have populated the Downs around Marlborough for hundreds of years.
W.H.Hudson in his classic book on rural Wiltshire, A Shepherd's Life, quotes the old shepherd Caleb Bawcombe " I don't say that I want to live my life again, because t'would be sinful. We must take what is sent. But if t'was offered to me and I was told to choose my work, I'd say, give me my Wiltshire Downs again and let me be a shepherd there all my life long."
