His Lordship and I had a lovely surprise today when daughter# 5 had time between trains to come to the Dower House for lunch. She had been staying with her sister in Glasgow in order to give a lecture at Strathclyde on Thursday and came through to Edinburgh this morningto catch her train south.

We hadn't seen her since February, so it was good to catch up and hear all the news about the grandchildren.

Her forfeit for lunch was a blip as there was little else in the can, although I did almost blip our matching pink shoes- the ones I wasn't supposed to copy and buy because, as you can imagine, no daughter wants her mother dressing identically.
