Earith Sluice

The stretch of the River Great Ouse between Popes Corner and Earith is known as the Old West River for reasons best known to itself.

From Earith, the Old Bedford River takes you north east to Denver, as does the roughly parallel New Bedford River, also known as Hundred Foot Drain. Neither go to Bedford. The latter is tidal; the former, due to locks, is not. (Google maps seem to call the Old Bedford river the River Delph/Counter Drain. It's all quite confusing.)

There is a lock at Earith. If you approach from the Old West River, you come out into the waters made tidal by the New Bedford River. The flow into the New Bedford River is controlled by a sluice, which is the subject of today's photo. The view is looking down from the road bridge over the New Bedford River at one of the sluice gates. The water with the cloud reflections in is the Great Ouse.

Now that I've confused you completely, you may go and have a lie down.

forgive me for not commenting on your photos of late: I have limited connectivity and electricity.
