Bell ropes-where's the bell ringer?

Today our local church had a campanology (bell ringing) demonstration, after which we were encouraged to have a go. Well it's more difficult than it looks! I did manage to get a couple of "dongs" but was in danger of disappearing into the ceiling. I now have a new respect for them.
