Aquamarine/Nanna K's Day

A real race!

Opening day of boating season in the PNW begins with crew races thru the Montlake cut followed by a parade of classic and newer boats. After the great weather this week, today turned up in the 50sF, windy and showery. Of course. Not the best of conditions for these boats. We do like to walk down to watch the rowing -it includes clubs like ours and high schoolers as well as the college teams. The University of Washington invites foreign crews to compete - and is always accused of inviting "cupcakes so they can give them a pounding" (their coach said this) so the UW has won this race since 2006 when they lost to Russia. Well this year the reigning world champion National team of Great Britain was the competition! The UW woman did overcome in their race but the men did not!! At least it was a real race between these two teams - this is less than 200 m from the finish (out of 2000) and the Brits (the far boat) are ahead about 2 seats here...we had trouble seeing the finish from where we stood but there was no big roar so we figured the Brits hung on to their slim lead! Well done!!!!! (you can guess who I was rooting for…) So I thought I’d post this for you blippers in Great Britain!
