The Circle of Life

Mum, Alex, Zoe and myself went off to see the Lion King today.

Yum Cha first in China Town, and then, with some time to spare before the show started, we decided to go for a wander.

Waiting at the lights to cross to Dixon Street, a crowd had gathered, a street performer was doing their thing with a hula hoop, standing on a box. It was a little while before it registered that a bus was on the pavement, and this in fact, was what everyone was looking at.

So we wandered over, and there, under the bus, was a man with dark hair in a red check jacket. And lots of blood on the pavement. It was clear he was dead. And all the while, the street performer, just 10 metres away at the rear of the bus, kept up with the hula hooping. Like a large mechanical toy.

It was horrible. And I feel so sorry for this poor man and his family.

Later, after the show, we had to walk past again to get to the carpark. The bus was still there, but everything was screened off. The hula hooper was strangely still going.

Perhaps it was mechanical after all.

We had such a lovely day, with this terrible thing at the centre of it all.

I don't know if I should be writing this. But that's what happened. So many more people could have been hurt, or even us, who were on our way there, just 20 seconds away.

You just don't know, do you.
