The wreck of the Peter Iredale

Back blip - Day 3 of our Amazing Oregon Adventure

We drove from Saint Helens to Cannon Beach, stopping at a number of viewpoints and scenic locations along the way. One highlight was this century-old shipwreck on the beach at Fort Stevens State Park, a long spit of sand that marks the entrance to the Columbia River.

The ship, the Peter Iredale, was a four-masted steel barque that ran ashore here on October 25, 1906. The ship sank even further into the sand when they tried to refloat her - so there she stays, rusty steel ribs on the beach. I suppose this will be the closest I will ever get to a shipwreck, as I am not interested in scuba diving, so I was so glad we could stop here on our vacation!
