Astillero 8-102

Today I´ll tell you something about Astillero. It´s the municipality where I´m living for three years.
Both the history and the economy of Astillero have been linked to shipbuilding as a result of the export of iron ore extracted from the nearby area of Cabarga, what encouraged the settlement in the municipality of the first shipyards of the Crown from the late sixteenth where they built their flagships, which resulted in a great economic activity that drew large crowds and that was the germ of what is now El Astillero. In the photo you can see Peña Cabarga (Mount Cabarga) in the background and the cranes of the shipyard close-up. As a curiosity I´ll tell you that some of the ships that combated in Trafalgar were constructed here. Among them, and as the most important, the San Juan Nepomuceno.

Hoy os voy a hablar de Astillero. Es el municipio en el que llevo viviendo tres años.
Tanto su historia como su economía han estado ligadas a la construcción naval a raíz de la exportación del mineral de hierro extraído de la cercana zona de Cabarga, lo que favoreció el asentamiento en el municipio de los primeros astilleros de la Corona desde finales del siglo XVI en donde se construyeron sus buques insignia, lo que dio lugar a una gran actividad económica que atrajo a numerosas personas y que fue el germen de lo que hoy es El Astillero. En la foto podeis ver Peña Cabarga al fondo y las gruas de los astilleros en primer plano. Como curiosidad deciros que alguno de los barcos que lucharon en Trafalgar fueron aquí construidos. Entre ellos y como el más importante, el San Juan Nepomuceno.
