Spitfire & Hurricane

These two aircraft were the main fighter aircraft of the Royal Air Force in the WWII.

The Spitfire was originally designed by Reginald (R.J.) Mitchell, Chief Designer at Supermarine Aviation, then after his death in 1937 by Joseph Smith. The Hurricane was designed by the Hawker Aircraft Company's Sydney Camm.

20,000 Spitfires and 14,000 Hurricanes were manufactured from 1935 to 1945 in factories all over England.

Spitfires were a single body design so had no frame underneath the skin, while Hurricanes were frame-based and could be transported in parts and put together like a kit on arrival.

'The First of The Few' ('Spitfire' in the US & Canada) is a 1942 film starring Leslie Howard as R.J.Mitchell.
