The beginning

I re-opened what had been the Universities Marine Station in Millport this morning . The history is given in the link but there was a real fear that the closure could have been permanent.

However thanks to the Field Studies Council , North Ayrshire Council, HIE , the SFC and a host of individuals that did not happen In addition the new owners have already started on a refurbishment ( much needed) and it is looking good and ready for another century or more of service.

The Station has a small aquarium and museum and this is part of a recreation of the beginning of marine science on the island - David Robertson's desk in "The Ark" ( a beached lighter which was his first laboratory ) complete with specimens.
