Grey Heron, London

This subspecies of Heron is Ardea cinerea cinerea Linnaeus.

Named after Carl Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist who classified thousands of plants and animals in the late 1760s-1780s.

Up to the 1700s in Sweden, surnames weren't used but Patronymic names were (you took the name of your father and added 'son of' or daughter of' to create your own second name e.g. Peterson, son of Peter, or O'Connor, son of Connor). Carl's father was the first person in his ancestry to adopt the permanent surname - Linnaeus.

Carl was born in a tiny hut in the Smaland region of Sweden, and by the time he died Carl was very famous all over Europe because of his botany.

Another person born in Smaland was Ingvar Kamprad. He started selling wooden products from his uncle's kitchen table at the age of 17, and gradually moved on to sell furniture too.

Ingvar named the business with his own initials, then added the first letter of the farm when he was born, Elmtaryd, and the nearby village Agunnaryd. He called it I.K.E.A.
