A Scarlet Woman

. . . or rather a Large Red Damselfly, Pyrrhosoma nymphula (female).

Large Red Damselflies are fairly common and widespread throughout the UK. They are also one of the earliest to emerge. When sitting amongst heather they are well camouflaged and difficult to spot.

This one was seen near the village of Falkland, Fife.
