Kotata in Summer

Here are some berries on the prickly bramble in my garden. This is my three-seasons treasure. I have blipped it in Spring, with its lovely white flowers, and in Autumn when the leaves are so colourful. Now the berries are ripening. They are large and juicy, with a slightly tart, but distinctive flavour.

Because Kotata looks and sounds like a Maori word I had assumed it was a New Zealand cultivar. Not so. According to Wikipedia it was developed by the US Dept of Agriculture in Oregon. It has different blackberries, loganberries and even raspberries in its ancestry. No wonder it is so delicious.

The leaves and berries have been battered by wind and hail so they don't look quite as good as they should.
