A Fine Day Out

Today promised to be a fine day, probably the only one over this bank holiday weekend. So Mum and I decided to go to Great Dixter, an historic house and a garden sitting on the East Sussex side of the county boundary with Kent. It was the family home of gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd (1921 - 2006) and the focus of his energy and enthusiasm, fuelling over 40 years of books and articles.

The garden is a riot of colour and dense planting - no formal planting schemes here - and in Lloyd's own words:

The borders are mixed, not herbaceous. I see no point in segregating plants of differing habit or habits. They can all help one another. So you’ll see shrubs, climbers, hardy and tender perennials, annuals and biennials, all growing together and contributing to the overall tapestry.

A terrace in front of the house is edged with a stone wall, covered in red and white flowers ( no labels here either, so haven't a clue what they are) which were buzzing with bees and these Red Admiral butterflies.

All in all we had a great day out
