Steam at Darnholm

After viewing the weather forecast we decided to head east to the North York Moors rather than west to the Yorkshire Dales. We ended up at Goathland near Pickering.

We did a walk through the village, down to Mallyan Spout waterfall, and then along the beck and meadows to Beckhole. We had a lovely picnic on the village green where the Quoit pitches are. After consulting the map we headed along the stream again, past the railway to Thomason Foss waterfall. While walking through the woods we saw a deer and heard a steam train. Once we arrived at the waterfall, it soon became apparent that the path didn't go any further and did not join up with the path we intended to follow, so we had to retrace our steps back to Beckhole.

As it was quite a warm day we decided to rehydrate at the village shop/pub/brewery. I tried a half pint of the village brew and it was very nice.

We got going again and managed to walk up the very steep road out of the village, passing a car which had got stuck on the hill. I'm not sure how it had happened, but the driver was very snappy when his wife asked if she should have a go at driving the car.

I split from my parents who went directly back to Goathland and I went down into the hamlet of Darnholm, where I would follow a footpath along the side of the North York Moors Railway back to Goathland.

I paused a while until a steam train came along from Grosmont, its quite a steep incline from Grosmont to Goathland so the trains get quite a work out.

On the way back home we had to queue in traffic heading back home from the day at the coast, and we called into a Fish and Chip restaurant for tea.

Back to work tomorrow.

I'll have some more time to comment tomorrow, and I'll add some more pics from the day to Flickr in a day or so.

Thanks for the comments on yesterdays picture of York, they are appreciated.
