The Viaduct

Built in 1857, this 600m long viaduct has 50 arches reaching 52m high which makes it one if the most remarkable constructions of the 19thc in Europe if not in the world.
It was designed by Emile Decomble and was built to enable trains to reach the high town. Amazingly it as completed in just 15 months by 2,500 workers, 60,000 cubic m. of masonry and 300 horses working day and night! Partially destroyed on 31 August 1944, it was quickly rebuilt t restore the circulation of the railway and economy to the county town.

The footpath at level one is still used as is the railway link, but we are not sure whether the middle level is still in use. Nevertheless a remarkable construction.

Laptop? "Hammer" springs to mind except that it is going back to the manufacturer when we get home. Lost programmes now and haven't got the discs with me to put them back on. Never mind - it could be worse.
