A Bird

On my way to work I pass the canal. Since The Snow turned it into a winter wonderland postcard scene I've been trying to take a good photo of it, but it always ends up looking like a street and not a canal. So today, when I saw this bird on the bank of the canal I was very pleased and hastily blipped it! Now I just need to find out what sort of bird it is - anybody know? It has a very snazzy red beak.
