Exploring Rethymno

An early start today as we were keen to exploring Crete as quickly as possible and our first day certainly didn't let us down!

We walked into Rethymno as we weren't sure where to get the bus and we also wanted to explore the surrounding area. It was a long walk but we saw lots of 'real' Crete and it's crazy driving!

Rethymno is beautiful, the beach is golden and the harbour is breathtaking against the blue sea! We had a walk along the promenade and found a nice restaurant to have lunch in with a sea view and some shade! After lunch, we headed into the back streets and stumbled upon the Fortress. We had wanted to do the bus tour, but it leaves every two hours and we weren't told this, so we went into the Fortress instead.

The views are amazing! Although there is barely anything left of the Fortress, there were huge piles of cannon balls everywhere..health and safety is hugely different to in the UK!

We headed back towards the hotel on the bus but got off at the wrong stopped and ended up taking a sunset walk along the beach, which was awesome. The tide was coming in, so we took turns pulling poses as the waves splashed and the other photographed. We ended up with some excellent photos and the sunset was brilliant.

We had dinner at a restaurant near to the hotel, which meant we could have a couple of drinks. Neither of us got ID'd and the cocktails came with sparklers!

I think we're going back to Rethymno tomorrow.
