CannyScot's Day

Setting Sail

We drove from Kyle of Lochalsh to Ullapool, via Shieldaig, Torridon, Gruinard Bay, Loch Maree, Corrieshaloch Gorge (where the Falls of Measach are).
It started out rather wet and then brightened up for the rest of the journey. The views are spectacular, wherever you are and if you are looking for a great Road Trip - no need to go any further than the west coast of Scotland.

We set sail from Ullapool to Stornoway on the CalMac ferry, the 'Isle of Lewis'. The journey takes just under 3 hours. Leaving Ullapool, there are many small islands to negotiate, but once past them you are out into the Minch. We were fortunate that we had a very smooth crossing.

Once on Lewis, we had an hours drive over to the far west coast. The terrain is fairly flat with dozens of lochans and peat bogs. Fortunately, being so far north, it was light until at least 10.30pm, allowing us to see the way along some very narrow roads.

If you would like to see some photos of some of the places mentioned above on the mainland drive - see my Flikr set. They include one of the strongest warnings you are ever likely to see before setting out on the road to Applecross.
