Etaples Military Cemetery

In Northern France close to the beach resort of Le Touquet. There are over 11,500 graves including 20 women, 660 German soldiers and 120 Commonwealth servicemen from World War Two, 39 of whom remain unidentified.

During the First World War Etaples had been a huge base with a large military hospital. The dates on many of the headstones reflect that many died of their wounds after the war ended. The most upsetting for me were those that died on the eleventh day of the eleventh month 1918. Peace came too late for them.

They are remembered.

Another view of the same place taken on the same day.
