Quod oculus meus videt

The Grand Canal, Venice

Our final full day on board and the rare opportunity to visit one of the great cities of the world during the 'golden' hour. We had entered the lagoon at about midday. The entrance by ship is an opportunity not to be missed as you pass the Doges Palace and St Mark's Square on the way to the port. It's said that this will not be allowed after this year, which will prevent people experiencing one of the great port entrances.

We caught a water shuttle to St. Mark's and enjoyed a leisurely promenade around the square. Well at least until the heavens opened! Everyone rushed for cover and we bought a cheap umbrella so we could explore further afield. Fortunately the rain stopped soon after and we had good light as the sun slowly sank to the west. This shot was taken just after 8 'o' clock from a jetty just below the Rialto Bridge.
