CannyScot's Day

Wet Beach

Sadly, it has rained all day. We had lunch in the local Community Cafe, which is also the site of the Museum. The community is very widespread but the people work together on a whole range of projects, from land ownership to building community centres. Everyone knows everyone else, which has its plusses and minuses. Our immediate next door neighbours are well known publicly, but are involved in the community the same as everyone else.

After lunch, we drove round some of the nearby beaches, which looked beautiful, even in the rain.

Being here on the island has certainly given us an insight into rural life. Although there are large distances between villages, the life in the communities is vibrant. I think that it takes a lot of commitment to live and work here, but very rewarding for those who do stay.
