Bristol's Floating Harbour

Bristol's Floating Harbour - extract from the Bristol's Floating Harbour website:

"In 1809 Bristol was transformed by the opening of the Floating Harbour.

"80 acres of tidal river was impounded to allow visiting ships to remain afloat all the time. Over the next two centuries the Harbour grew as a busy commercial port until it closed in 1975. Since then, it has been regenerated for leisure, commerce and residence."

We visited the Brunel Institute at the ss Great Britain in Bristol on our way back from Wales today. It is a very interesting resource containing plans of a huge number of ships, historical technical engineering texts, models of ships, correspondence and personal writings of passengers and crew of the ss Great Britain, and much more.

This photo is of a development of flats across the floating dock from the ss Great Britain, which was behind me when I took this. I have put an infrared version in the Blippers Community overspill page.

I blipped from the ss Great Britain on May 8th and again on 31st May
