White on Yellow

I'm still doing battle with the laptop, the hard drive is now installed and seems to be working ok but there are seemingly endless updates to do that take forever and it doesn't seem to want to install some of them. Does anyone out there know how to get Windows Updates that have been download onto the machine to install manually (in Windows 8.1) my laptop has downloaded them but won't install them and I don't know how to persuade it to do it. I am very slowly getting organised, hopefully another couple of days should see me back to normal :-)
