55 Week Street, Maidstone

Another in the sequence of shots of buildings in Maidstone. Above the modern shop front is an interesting building dating from 1680. I've passed this building countless times, photographed it for a possible blip before, but not investigated it in any detail. It just goes to show that as well as looking at the shop front it is important to look up as well.

This is what it says about this building on the British Listed Buildings website:

"One building, now 2 shops. A timber-framed building with plastered front and 1st floor still partly overhanging but with modern alterations. 3 storeys.
Tiled roof and heavy wooden modillion eaves cornice. The lst and 2nd floors have 3 panels of pargetting, dated 1680 incorporating oval medallions, pilasters, swags and floral vase motifs, Cornice between the 1st and 2nd floors. 1 sash window to no 55 with glazing bars intact to 2nd floor only. No 57 has a modern window on the 2nd floor only"

All towns have little gems like this if we only looked for them.

I was in town to pay a visit to the dentist to have a tooth prepared for a crown. I wasn't looking forward to this as you can imagine. Fortunately anaesthetics have moved on and a single injection immediately numbed just the tooth but not the whole side of the mouth as it used to. Good thing too as the drilling took some time I can tell you. I'll let your imagination deal with the sensation.

After having a temporary crown fitted I was out and free and able to cycle up to the town centre to return some clothes to Marks and Spencer's and to pay in some cheques and get back home to get to grips with a whole pile of stuff that had built up last week while we were away. Managed to infect the PC with rogue programs again which took a while to sort out, but everything appears to be back to normal again.
